Saint-Louis: the ECOWAS Representation strengthens its partnership with SEN-CSU

The ECOWAS Resident Representation in Senegal paid a courtesy visit to the Regional Universal Health Coverage Agency (SEN-CSU) in Saint-Louis on 8 October 2025. The meeting reflects ECOWAS’s determination to support Senegal in its efforts to guarantee access to health care for all citizens.

A visit to strengthen cooperation

The Resident Representation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Senegal travelled to Saint-Louis on 8 October 2025 for a courtesy visit to the Regional Universal Health Coverage Agency (SEN-CSU).

The aim of the meeting was to better understand the challenges facing the Saint-Louis region in implementing universal health coverage and to explore avenues for collaboration between ECOWAS and national health actors.

SEN-CSU: an ambitious vision for Senegal

The SEN-CSU Agency has an ambitious vision: to become an internationally recognised social health protection body by 2035. Its mandate is to guarantee all people living in Senegal cover against the financial risk of illness, without any form of exclusion.

In the Saint-Louis region, the Regional Agency works to raise awareness of universal health coverage among the population, particularly the most vulnerable.

ECOWAS support: logistics and strategy

During the visit, the ECOWAS delegation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Senegal’s efforts in the field of health. This support will cover in particular:

  • Logistics: strengthening the operational capacity of the Regional Agency
  • Strategy: support in planning and implementing health coverage programmes
  • Outreach: helping raise people’s awareness of their rights to social health protection

A regional approach to health

This visit is in line with the ECOWAS vision of promoting universal access to health care across the Community. The West African Health Organisation (WAHO), a specialised ECOWAS institution, works to harmonise Member States’ health policies and strengthen national health systems.

The ECOWAS Resident Representation in Senegal will continue to support national initiatives that contribute to people’s well-being and to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

“ECOWAS reaffirms its commitment to supporting Senegal in its efforts to guarantee every citizen access to quality health care without financial barriers.”
